Re: Bio-Augmentation studies of Your Mixed Liquor;

BACKGROUND:

Following are the results of analyses we performed on samples as received by us on November 06, 1996. These were Mixed Liquor Samples from your Aerobic Basin and of Primary Effluent. These samples were initially analyzed to establish base-line data, and to assure that appropriate concentrations of nutrients were present for the growth of large numbers of micro-organisms, as well as discover if any inhibitory quantities of toxic materials were present. These results also establish the basis upon which experimental Comparison can be made. The results are as follows:

No toxic concentrations of metal ions were found.

EXPERIMENTAL:

Following this initial analysis, aliquots of the Mixed Liquor were inoculated with AquaClean at concentrations of 10 and 20mg/l or parts per million (PPM). These samples were then placed in a bio-oxidation system together with an untreated portion of the sample to serve as a control. The oxidation system was designed to effect conditions of an aerobic digester. The sample aliquots were fed settled primary effluent and monitored analytically from 11-03 through 11-11-96. Following are the results of that monitoring.

The final BOD of these samples was 15 mg/l for the 10 PPM and 10 mg/l for the 20 PPM treatment. As you can see good reduction of COD, BOD, and Suspended Solids has been demonstrated by AquaClean treatment at all levels. When the final results are compared to the untreated sample you can see the marked improvement that is the direct result of the bio-augmentation. Essentially we have treated these samples with our Laboratory bench model, but in actual use in your system the biota will be altered in the aerobic digester so that the results will match those we obtained in the lab. As you have described the problem of periodic organic overloading in the system we feel that the use of AquaClean will assist you in the reduction of solids and prevent the overloading conditions, assuring you of compliance with your discharge parameters. The odor causing H2S was oxidized to 1.60 mg/l within three days of application, and continued to drop to <0.10 mg/l.

We recommend that AquaClean be introduced into your Aerobic Digester at the rate of 20 PPM, based on the volume of the system into which it is applied. This would represent 24 gallons of AquaClean introduced over a 4 day period. A 1.0 mg/l maintenance dose based on flow should be applied to assure the adequate population of bacteria to effect the reduction you desire to achieve. The Hydrogen Sulfide will be kept to a concentration well below that which would cause an odor problem.
