Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant / Holland

AquaClean ACF-32 Treatment

SLUDGE REDUCTION OF OVER 25 PERCENT…..

MEANS BIG SAVINGS AND BETTER PROFITS

A large Regional WWS Facility in Holland, servicing many small communities over a large area by a network of domestic sewage collection conduits. Total Population Equivalent (PE) is 537,000, pumped to this central facility on the coast of Holland. The facility is a well designed and operated waste water treatment plant. The basic design brings the domestic sewage to a gross filter and then into a collection diverter, separating the flow into 4 Trains. In each of the Trains, the first tank, the Primary (Facultative) Receiver, is a covered with thick floating Styrofoam sheets to lower odor emissions. From here it flows into an Aeration Tank, and then onto large Settling Clarifier. After this point, the flow is dewatered and the pressed cake is further processed in anaerobic chambers.

The system was operating well, but had periodic odor issues, and wanted to lower its sludge handling costs. AquaClean was applied for a 12 week trial and, as the tracking data shows on the next page, was able to improve the general performance of the facility, as well as significantly reduce sludge generation and handling costs.

The trial collected data for six weeks prior to treatment and compared this to twelve weeks when AquaClean was applied. AquaClean was able to improve the general performance of the facility, and over time will certainly improve upon this performance even further without any danger of disruption. Qualitatively, the issue of odor was resolved…and more importantly sludge handling costs were reduced by 28 percent. The actual treatment protocol was as follows:

System Section Volume ACF-32 Treatment Dosage Gallons Per Week

Week 1-2-3-4 Weekly Thereafter

Basic Daily Flow 300 m3/hour

Primary Tank 10 Gallons 6 Gallons

Aeration Tank 10 Gallons 6 Gallons

Clarifier _________ _________

Total 20 Gallons 12 Gallons

Based on the application costs compared to local sludge handling costs, the cost/benefit analysis will generate a savings of € 180 per metric ton of sludge reduction. In this case, the savings was some 28% of their sludge handling costs.

There have been excellent reductions in BOD and COD. The increased fraction of COD removal suggests that there is an industrial component and that the Facility is now showing much better removal efficiencies due to ACF-32.

The ammonia nitrogen removal has improved. This improvement is either from increased heterotrophic uptake related to the improved COD and BOD removal, or to improved nitrification efficiency.

The TKN removal has also improved, which makes the net ammonia/nitrogen removal efficiency even more impressive, as the loading is higher as a result of the enhanced TKN breakdown.

Further operating benefits will certainly be gained from lower maintenance costs due to lower fats, oil and grease in the system, as well as lower H2S effect on equipment.
